Nationalization. The word makes one shudder!  It might even drudge up old images of the hammer and sickle or Mao's men marching in khaki uniforms!  We've already mentioned the subject of nationalizing some of the nation's banks on this blog, but it seems there is much more to say.

There is a real stigma attached to that word, but as David Reilly of Bloomberg noted, “The nationalization debate is a smoke screen. We’ve already nationalized the big banks. Let’s just accept it and move on."

So far, no one has found the magic balm to stop the economy from bleeding money. Once again the Dow headed south taking 250 points and our hard earned money with it.  Obviously nobody trusts that the bailout and stimulus plan are enough to turn things around.

This is herd mentality in reverse.  Instead of jumping on the bandwagons of the latest hot trends and letting irrational exuberance push prices up to the unsustainable levels that create financial bubbles, everyone now seems to be rushing in the opposite direction, running scared and selling off because that’s what everybody else is doing.  It’s total fear-based selling.

There have been so many bail-out packages, stimulus proposals and other unprecedented plans designed to save the economy, it's become nearly impossible for the casual observer to keep track of it all. Next up: sorting out the mortgage problems and finding a way to stem foreclosures with the aptly named Housing Recovery Plan. We're not sure if the purpose of all this is to stimulate an economic recovery, or stabilize the recession.
